Elective time provides a unique opportunity to explore rotations that 1) are interesting to the resident 2) serve to fill a ‘gap’ in areas residents feel less comfortable and/or 3) help inform or further future career goals.

This is a step-by-step guide to walk you through the various elective options and timelines for submission of required paperwork.
WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?
Planning an elective is largely guided by the you, the resident. This offers flexibility and autonomy in planning, but also requires planning and foresight. Electives generally fall into one of several ‘buckets’:
Subspecialty Inpatient Electives
The core subspecialties all generally accept residents wishing to utilize their elective time this way. Please reach out to the proper subspecialty coordinator listed within the Elective Planning Guide.
This is a list of half-day clinics that one can rotate through, either alone or in conjunction with reading and/or research half-days.
