Machine Operation

Here is a quick powerpoint or, if you prefer, a video, that runs through the basics of machine operation and image optimization. Only have a minute? Here is a pocket cheat sheet.

NOTE: Most ultrasounds have similar setups, with the buttons in different locations. If you want machine specific instructions, find your device below.

SonoSite Edge II:

SonoSite has made several videos on machine operation that cover basic functionality, here and here.

SonoSite X-Porte

The X-Porte operates much like the Edge, with easer functionality and better image quality. Tutorial here.

Butterfly iQ:

Dr. Mike Stone takes you through the basics of use here.

Want more information, I have compiled a deeper dive on our website.

Protocols

Use and disinfection protocols for the hospital and ambulatory setting.

KEY: Ensure you have all items necessary prior to entering room to avoid PPE misuse.

Cardiology Review

OHSU Cardiology is currently asking for Cardiology attending to primary attending conversation on utility of echocardiography for all patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 disease. To optimize resource utilization, Cardiology has offered to over-read POCUS examinations at OHSU. To have this done, please do the following:

  1. Complete POCUS Scan (Cardiology recommends obtaining PLAX, PSAX, A4C views of the heart)- make sure you clip (take a video of your images and END the encounter.
  2. Check Qpath (ED/IM) or PACS (ICUs) to ensure that examinations were uploaded.
  3. Call the Echo Attending or Cardiology Fellow to ask them to look at the study.

** if the encounter was not saved try the following

  1. Look for a "file cabinet" icon on the right side of the screen to see if the examination is actively uploading.
  2. Hit the "Review" button to see if the exam was saved to the machine and archived to the server.
  3. In urgent case, discuss with Cardiology about how to provide them with the images.
  4. In non-urgent cases, contact Dr. Kevin Piro.

US Faculty Over-read

For POCUS examinations that you would like over-read by a non-Cardiologist at OHSU, you may email Dr. Kevin Piro, Dr. Florian Sattelmacher, and Dr. Mike Northrop.
